“Black Lives Matter” Solidarity Painting
Gold acrylic on Black acrylic and gesso on canvas.
Original painted for Librarie Racines, at the request of bookstore owner Gabriella Kinté. Not for sale.
This piece illustrates:
- Fire symbolising fierce resistance, resilience, and love illustrated by the sentence, “Black Lives Matter,” in Urdu script;
- Solidarity symbolised by hands in the form of a Du’a (part of the way my mother and grandmother taught me to pray);
- The Mohawk word Kanien’kehá: ka is written in Urdu script below/touching the hands, as a way to acknowledge this land and terrain of struggle as unceded Indigenous land, and a site of ongoing presence and exchange between many Indigenous Nations.
